Spiritual healing
Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by your emotions that you just can’t get on with your life even when you tell yourself the event is over and you shouldn’t feel like this? Or maybe you just feel like you can’t find the inner strength and motivation to do what you know you should be doing?
My first contact with the healing traditions of the Maya tribe was connected to womb massage and the amazing benefits it has on fertility, the menstrual cycle, pelvic pain and digestion because those are the areas I work mostly with in my clinic.
However, I discovered that ancient Mayan healers truly embodied belief in the mind body connection and they had a simple yet powerful system of helping heal people from what they call spiritual ailments.
At first, I admit I had a bit of a hard time with the term spiritual ailments. In the Western world, I think that many of these spiritual ailments are referred to as emotional states, for example fear, fright, shock, grief, sadness, anger, jealousy, etc.
It doesn’t really matter whether we call them emotional states or spiritual ailments, the important thing is that we find a way to feel better so we can live our lives in a happier and more productive way.
When you feel stuck, you don’t really care what it is that will help you as long as it helps you make some sort of positive change. This healing work is profound and highly effective in spite or maybe because of it’s simplicity.

What is Mayan Spiritual Healing?
In Maya, chu’lel (pronounced shu’el) is the invisible yet vibrant, divine and creative life energy that is present in all living creatures, plants, rocks, water and prayer. The most concentrated chu’lel can be found in water such as springs, waterfalls, rives and lakes. I think this partly explains human fascination with these bodies or waters and why we are drawn to spend time close to them.
If you experienced a trauma that caused a great fright or grief, some of your ch’ulel may have been separated and left behind. This results in a “spiritual illness” that can leave you with ongoing fears, anxiety, sadness, depression, lack of vitality and even physical symptoms.
Maya spiritual healing uses the healing power of water, plants, copal incense and prayer to call back your ch’ulel, to nourish and honor your energetic body and connect it with your physical body.
How does Mayan Spiritual Healing work?
The Spiritual Healing I have learned is based on Rosita Arvigo’s work with the shaman Don Elijio Panti in Belize and it includes the use of plants, prayer, water and intention. Although the session can take place outside I usually conduct the sessions within the privacy of my clinic.
We start with a conversation about the reasons why you are seeking spiritual healing. You will soak your feet and hands in a relaxing foot bath with plants and flowers I have been gathered for you specifically with prayer & intention.
Afterwards, while you lie on the table, I will use copal incense and more plant infused water to cleanse your aura and balance your energetic body. You will have time to relax and experience the healing while the plant infused water, copal and energy healing do their work.
What can I expect to feel after a Mayan Spiritual Healing session?
Sometimes people experience a deep emotional release, a feeling of clarity and deep serenity, insightful visions and a new understanding around the issues they are dealing with. No two processes are the same.
Some people have described it as having “a weight lifted from the heart”, “a feeling of lightness” and “a renewed sense of joy in life”.
Where does this work come from?
The Mayans are the people of Guatemala, southern Mexico, and Belize, who are descendants of the people of the ancient Mayan civilization which was destroyed by Spain. Many of their descendants still follow many Mayan cultural traditions while also living in the modern world.
Dr. Rosita Arvigo learned spiritual healing from her mentor, Don Elijio Panti, the renowned Maya shaman of Belize, with whom she apprenticed for 13 years. I, in turn, learned this transformation work from Dr. Rosita Arvigo, Eva Sengfredler and Vivian Menjiver, all teachers in the Abdominal Therapy Collective.
How does this fit in with Judaism and other beliefs?
Mayan spiritual healing is compatible with any spiritual or religious practice. I am an observant Orthodox Jew. I use Hebrew prayers during the treatment and everything I do is within the bounds of Orthodox Judaism. I treat people from all walks of life and religious beliefs.
Is Mayan Spiritual healing appropriate during pregnancy?
Yes, Mayan Spiritual healing can be done during pregnancy. More and more evidence shows that the emotions a woman experiences during pregnancy have a huge impact on her growing baby so it is important to release any negativity during pregnancy for your sake, the baby’s sake and to prepare for a good birth.
Is Mayan Spiritual healing appropriate for children and babies?
Maya spiritual healing is appropriate for anyone of any age, including babies. It can be especially helpful after a traumatic birth, a difficult pregnancy, for babies that are easily frightened, always want to be held and won’t settle easily.
What can Mayan Spiritual Healing be used for?
Mayan Spiritual Healing can be used to heal old wounds, traumas, and to help us release what no longer serves us, but still resides within us.
Helps remove attachments; from within us, and from others directed towards us.
After a miscarriage, a difficult birth, or challenging fertility treatments a Spiritual healing session can be just what you need to move forward.
How many sessions of Mayan Spiritual Healing do I need?
Some people find one session is enough while others will need more than one treatment to achieve the results they want. I usually suggest people come for one session and see how they feel afterwards. I trust that you will know if you need further healing sessions.
I have clients who combine this work with bodywork, too.
