Sobada Abdominal Massage
Sobada Abdominal Massage is a relaxing and therapeutic massage that strengthens the uterus and improves blood flow to the organs in your pelvis including your ovaries and uterus. Sobada is often nicknamed womb massage or uterine massage because of it’s profound impact on your womb.
The treatment helps to improve your menstrual cycle, overall fertility and digestive health.
The treatment helps relax tension in your abdomen, release adhesions and return organs (including your uterus) to their optimum position. As a result, Sobada treatments can be helpful with issues related to the abdomen and pelvis which include issues related to a woman’s menstrual cycle including fertility and menopause, pregnancy, pelvic and stomach pains, digestive issues and emotional and spiritual issues, too.

FAQ
What happens in a treatment?
There are three main parts of treatment:
- Your story: We start with me listening to your story. This is your opportunity to share with me the symptoms you are experiencing, your goals for the treatment and your medical history.
- Treatment: Then we move onto the treatment itself which consists of massage on your upper and lower abdomen and back combined with foot reflexology and other bodywork techniques. Part of the massage is directly on your skin with the use of oil and some techniques are performed over the sheet. I only expose the part of your body I am actively working on and your chest/breasts are covered at all times.
- Self-care massage: I can also teach you a short massage you can do on your belly at home to continue the benefits of the treatment.
At the end, you get dressed and we discuss the next steps to reach your goals.
What is the self care massage?
You’re going to touch my belly?
Yes, the treatment includes massage on your upper and lower abdomen. Before the treatment begins I will show you exactly where I’ll be working and if you want any changes made you can tell me at any time during the treatment.
According to Don Elijio Panti, the Belize shaman who taught Rosita Arvigo the bodywork technique we now call Sobada in Israel, a woman’s uterus is her center. When her uterus is not in the correct place her whole body is out of alignment.
Your abdomen is your center and it contains important organs including reproductive and digestive organs.
Your womb also houses your memories, experiences, traumas, fears and desires. That’s why working on your belly is so powerful and effective in improving your physical and emotional health.
Is the treatment internal or just external? Is the treatment painful?
All Sobada treatment consists of external massage and other bodywork techniques only. The massage is on your upper and lower abdomen and back. Due to the fact that I am a reflexologist I usually incorporate foot reflexology into the treatment, too.
There is no internal vaginal massage.
No. I have many years of experience working with women in varying stages of chronic and acute pain. At the beginning of the treatment, I will show you where I will be working and invite you to be an active participant in the treatment and communicate with me about anything you might be feeling.
If you have a history of pain, tenderness and/or sensitivity in any of the areas I will be massaging, I will work gently and carefully.
My experience has shown me that gentle techniques are very effective in encouraging healing and I prefer to work slowly and mindfully with you to encourage long term healing with as little as possible discomfort along the way.
I don’t like having my belly touched or I’m very sensitive
It’s important for me that you feel comfortable so at the beginning of the treatment, I will show you where I will be working and invite you to be an active participant in the treatment and communicate with me about anything you might be feeling.
Sometimes, when you dislike having your belly touched it’s because you are holding a lot of physical and/or emotional tension and the treatment can help you gently release it.
In similar cases, I have focused more on the work on the back and teaching and encouraging you to massage your own belly because that can sometimes be easier than have someone else touch you if you are sensitive.
Is Sobada relevant if I don’t have a uterus?
Even if you have had a hysterectomy, you can benefit from Sobada treatment. When your uterus was removed, it left a space and the remaining organs now have to reposition themselves. The abdominal and back massage helps encourage that repositioning and brings improved blood and energy flow to the area to promote long term health. Any surgery will create some scar tissue and Sobada treatment can help break up that scar tissue and encourage good healing in the area.
Interestingly, even if the womb is not physically present, the spirit and energy remains. I can help you honour yourself and the physical and emotional changes you have gone through with the surgery.
Some women choose to come for treatment before a hysterectomy as a way of honouring their body and their choices, prepare physically and emotionally for the surgery and promote post-surgery healing.
What about Sobada for men?
Sobada is suitable for men to improve their digestive and reproductive health. Men can benefit from the treatment as much as women and can also learn and perform the self care massage as part of their daily self care routine.
What about Sobada during pregnancy?
I have completed further Sobada training and I’m fully qualified to treat women during pregnancy from before you confirm you’re pregnant until birth and the postpartum period.
Treatment during pregnancy can relieve symptoms like heartburn, nausea, pelvic pain, lack of circulation, haemorrhoids and more. Close to the birth there are techniques that help prepare your body for the birth.
I’m having fertility treatments. Can I have Sobada treatment at the same time?
Yes, you can usually have Sobada treatment while having fertility treatments. Sobada treatment is very helpful in preparing for fertility treatments and improving your chances of conceiving. However, it is important to time the treatments correctly around the various fertility treatments. Please read the section on my website about fertility treatments and then discuss with me.
Where does Sobada originate from?
Sobada is a form of bodywork that originates in Central America.
Rosita Arvigo is one of the pioneers in the development of this bodywork and largely responsible for the sharing of this information outside of Central America. Rosita was born in Chicago, USA and studied bodywork techniques and herbal medicine before moving to Belize where she became a devoted student of the shaman Don Elijio Panti for thirteen years.
Part of Rosita Arvigo’s legacy is the way she was able to combine her knowledge of anatomy and physiology together with the traditional knowledge from Don Elijio Panti and her work with traditional midwives to develop a set of bodywork techniques which are used and taught around the world.
What’s the connection between Arvigo therapy and Sobada?
These techniques came to Israel in 2007 and were originally known as “The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage” or “Arvigo therapy”. In recent years, due to organisation changes but with the full support of Rosita Arvigo, Israeli practitioners trained in Arvigo therapy rebranded under the name Sobada.
Rosita Arvigo and most of the teachers she trained now teach under a new organisation they created in 2021 called The Abdominal Therapy Collective.
